Today we’re discussing hardwood floor water damage and repair.
Hardwood Floor Damage
The repair we do to your damaged hardwood floors depends on the amount of damage done to them, the material the floor is made out of, and if there is water under the floor or not. Different wood types determine how well the floor will react to water damage.
Repair or replace?
We repair hardwood floors whenever we can. Sometimes, a section of the floor must be replaced, or the entire floor must be replaced. We can usually get an exact match for some flooring. Other times the entire floor must be replaced. If you have major floor and water damage your homeowner’s insurance will take care of the claim.
Insurance companies like us to replace as quickly as possible as drying fees add up. If drying the floor is not going to rescue it they do not want to pay for both the rescue attempt and the replacement. Nor would we want to overcharge anyone. If the floor can be saved or not depends on how much water is on it, how long it has been there, and what is underneath it. If the floor is wet and you want any chance of saving it we do need to be on site ASAP. Blowers and dehumidifiers will not save a hardwood floor. If they can be rescued these hardwood drying mats will do the trick. We do have these on our trucks:
Not all wood floors are created equally.
Wood floors come in strip wood, plank wood, engineered wood, and laminate wood.
- Solid and Plank wood floors. Strip wood and plank wood floors are actually strips of wood. These floors can sometimes be restored. Sometimes they can even be restored several times. Solid plank wood floors can be made from maple, oak, or another type of wood. Plank wood is more forgiving, and may be saved as described above. We will do everything we can to save your wood floors, but keep in mind not all wood floors can be saved.
- Engineered and laminate wood floors. These are engineered- built from various wood layers glued together. Laminate wood floors a very popular in homes in Cary, NC; these look like wood floors but are not entirely wood. Picture soggy cardboard- that is what these look like when they get wet. These are always replaced.

Around my house, we keep a fire extinguisher under each sink. Every sink. In the entire house.
We have seen a lot of fire damage from homes that had a fire extinguisher present. The problem is when the hot flames rise up, you have only seconds to act, and the adrenaline is pumping, and trying to remember where that fire extinguisher is located can be impossible. Is it in the kitchen? Lying around in the garage? Where is it?!
Keeping a fire extinguisher under each sink allows it to sink into your brain.
Recently we restored a home that had been damaged by smoke and fire. The grease in a pan had led to this fire. You can read here about this grease fire.
In the event, there is a grease fire you could easily whip out the fire extinguisher and smother the flames if you keep a fire extinguisher under the sinks in your home. These devices are available at your local superstore for around $29.
If you own a home that has been damaged by fire please feel free to read about our fire damage and restoration services.
Stove and Grease Fire Damage in Cary NC
We went to a home not long ago that had a grease fire. The home was located right here in Cary NC.
The homeowner was away at work and a relative was over. We’re not sure if they were not used to the stovetop or the pots and pans, or what happened, but the pan with the grease went up in flames.
Here is a picture of the stove that caught the grease on fire:
Cary Fire Department came and extinguished the blaze.
Fires cause smoke damage
The smallest fires in Cary can cause major, stinky smoke damage. This is where restoration services come into play.

Bathroom Flooding in Cary NC
We had a call the other day for a flooded bathroom. The customer was right up the street from us here in Cary NC. In this case, the hot water pipe going up to the bathroom sink’s hot water faucet had burst while he was not home and it spewed a tremendous amount of water into his bathroom for approximately 8 hours.
Just like when you’re taking a shower, even when the hot water runs out, the water keeps on coming; it is just a different temperature.
Can you file an insurance claim for bathroom flooding?
Assuming the water has not been a slow leak, it was a burst pipe, most homeowners will have no problem filing a claim. Claims do not have to be filed for all burst pipes.
Usually when people call us for restoration, there is extensive water damage such as water in the drywall, water on the second floor leaking into the first floor, damaged electrical, damaged hardwood floors, etc.
What to do if you have water damage:
We have a page dedicated to water damage here: Cary North Carolina water damage. Please visit that page to see how our process works.
We work with all rooms in the home- not just the bathroom.

How to Extinguish a Grease Fire
Grease fires can be very difficult to extinguish. It is always a good idea to be prepared ahead of time. If you have a small grease fire in a pan at home the best thing you can do is smother the fire.
If you do not get the fire out in time you may end up with fire or smoke damage and end up needing our fire damage restoration service.
Here are a few tips for dealing with a small grease fire:
(Please note, every situation is different, and safety must come first. Do NOT hang around near a grease fire, you could get burned or killed. This is by no means an instruction manual, just a few tips).
- DO NOT USE WATER.
- A second pan, a lid, or a cookie sheet placed on top of the pan on fire will extinguish a grease fire.
- Turn of the burner. If the fire is contained inside the pan and you are confident you can reach the knobs without getting burned, turn the burner off. This is sometimes enough to put the fire out.
- Do not carry the grease around with you or attempt to carry it around the house or outdoors. This is just an accident waiting to happen.
- Call 911. Fires spread rapidly. If the fire is beyond the pan or you can not turn the burner off, call 911 immediately.
Dishwasher Leaks, Flooding, and Insurance in Cary NC
Appliance failures, such as dishwasher leaks, happen on a daily basis all over the United States. In Cary NC and the surrounding areas which we service on a daily basis, homeowners often inquire with us to see if their homeowner’s insurance will cover this type of flood damage.
If you are experiencing flood damage feel free to call our emergency hotline or visit our comprehensive page explaining flood damage and restoration.
Is Dishwasher Leaks Covered By Insurance
Generally, if a hose has burst behind or under the dishwasher, almost all damages resulting from this will be covered. Supply lines to a dishwasher can pump out hundreds of gallons of water each hour; it is amazing.
Slow leaks may be denied. This depends on the circumstances and your policy. In many cases, a small leak under “the tub” may go unnoticed for months or years. The resulting damage often includes damaged cabinets, mildew or mold damage, etc.
What To Do After Dishwasher Leak
Proactively take the kick plate off of the bottom of the washer and look for drips each spring and fall. A slow leak can begin from hoses, pumps, mounts, etc.
